The "flapper" (that rubber thing that moves up when you flush) is not returning to its seat and the toilet keeps running. I have to move its arms back and forth and then it seems to work for another few days before it hangs up again.

Is there some permanent solution to this? And is there some way to prevent this from happening if I have to buy a new flapper?

Thanks

Does the flappers 'arms' snap onto ears on the bottom of the overflow tube? Sometimes you can take the flapper 'arms' and spread them apart and reclip on, to eliminate a bind there if the bind is against the overflow tube. I have also seen flappers that have been replaced where the backside of the flapper is too far back and hits the overflow tube. You canotch out the rubber some if that is the case.

Or, try another flapper.

Yes, it has arms that attach to the ears at the bottom of the tube.

It seems that when it doesn't close, it's because one of the arms is twisted. So I just move the arm back and forth several times and then it falls into place -- until the next time (which is happening more frequently).

It's almost as if there is something on the ear which is preventing the arm from moving freely, so that the flapper stays open. But it's not contacting the tube, or anything.

I have to agree with above poster...use a different flapper.
