Hi,
I currently have a 2.5 A/C unit and last year the wires to the condenser kept frying and I just found a great deal on a 4 ton unit and purchased it. Is it possible to use a 4 ton in place of a 2.5? I was told by my stepson who is a helper at a heating and A/C co. that I would need to change the coil on my furnace since the new unit is larger he said it would freeze the current coil. Is this true, are there any other issues I need to consider before installing a 4 ton unit in place of a 2.5? I don't want to put it in and then have an issue.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. My new 4 ton is a Comfortmaker and my furnance is a Goodman GMPN080-4. Thanks!

Lets just say NO NO to it all. Yes you need a new coil inside .Yes you need new lines. Yes you need a new furnace that has a bigger blower in it. yes you need all new duct work. Yes you need all new electric to this new unit.
So will the 4 ton work for you NO It will start and stop to much . That your electric bill will go up. ;)

One last thought, although you are probably both right. But I'll try anyway.
The my furnace has a 4 ton blower, the a/c unit is already 220v, and my ductwork is 6" x 12. Would you still have the same concerns?...from both replies. Could I get away with just changing the coil with this new info?
Thanks

You say a 6"X12" duct thats 72sq". A 4 ton AC need about 280sq" of duct.
a/c unit is already 220v, Yes but thats not the amp breaker or wire you need for the 4 ton

A single 6x12 duct won't carry enough air for one ton of cooling let alone four tons.
If you have been using that heater with that little bit of duct, I would bet dollars to donuts the heat exchanger is cracked.

Sell this unit you bought and purchase a nice new 2 1/2 ton condenser that will serve its purpose without having to reinvent the wheel. The Frankenstein thing has already been done and redone and it always turns out the same A MONSTER.

Briora,
You should have asked us BEFORE you bought. I great deal is only a great deal when it suits your needs. A 4 ton is overkill. The unit will cost more to run, cost more in electric, make you uncomfortable in your home and is down right wrong. But, there is always a but, you could add on to your house to make it big enought for a 4 ton unit and evereything might be fine.
Back to your original post:
"I currently have a 2.5 A/C unit and last year the wires to the condenser kept frying ". This indicates a problem, not a need to buy something twice as big.
Could be a weak or failing capacitor causeing over current, a compressor on it's way out that could use a hard start to help it out. Could even mean loose connections that need a turn of a screwdriver.
Not only do I want to say to everyone who answered you post to READ IT A COUPLE TIMES but I want to say to you that most times the answer is simple and not costly.
Get a tech to you unit (hopefully a good one) and have it checked out.
As far as the 4 ton goes. Spend $150 or so and get you EPA certification and hope you can sell it on Ebay.

where did he say the amont of square footage his home was? (i must have missed it). his 2.5 ton may be undersized and he really needs a 4 ton.

He said he had a problem with his 2.5 ton and BOUGHT a 4 ton (somewhere, probably used) and wants to put it it. Read the original post.
