OK.........this is high level info from my brother so I'm trying to get an understanding if the System repair guy is just being lazy. My brother's 20 year old house has a 20 year old carrier heat pump/cooling system for his upstairs, about 900 sq ft. It stopped working and the repair guy from a very LARGE croporate level repair and service company said "sorry..its time to replace both the compressor and attic unit for about $9000" almost as if this older style unit can no longer be repaired!!!! I think he mentioned a compatability issue if it needed a new outside compressor unit!!!! I guess my real question is why can't the unit be repaired? Parts no longer available? I personally have oil HW baseboard and window units so NO REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE HERE>

It probably could be repaired but it may cost more than $6,000 to do the repair and then something else would crap out.

Twenty years is good service from any heating / cooling system. There have been many advances in heat pump performance over the last twenty years.

It really boils down to throwing good money after bad.

Please urge your brother to get several estimates on repair and/or replacement of his system, it IS possible that the one estimate is really high.

If I can get parts for a 40 year old York you should be able to get parts.

$9000 is very high for a replacement of probly a 1 1/2 ton system. $6000 is astronomical for any residential repair.

Post the model and serial number and I can look up parts for the unit.

What exacly is going on with the unit?

Yes you can get parts for any old AC /HP. Fix it up and keep it running. But 20 years old is old. Most have a life of 15 years. You will get a pay back going to a new system with a SEER of 15 and a higher HSPF. Also a tax credit from the IRS and 10 year warranty on it all. That cost sounds very high. Make sure and get 3 bids for the job
