I'm a college student, and I fired up an old air conditioning unit I got from my boss. When I first turned it on, the unit worked great, then about 30 minutes later the unit stopped blowing cool air and was as if it was only on as "fan." The next day, after I cleaned the filter, I tried turning it on and seeing what's wrong, and it started blowing cool air again. Once again, after about 30 minutes of use, it stopped cooling and was just blowing air around.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? It seems to be at least 5 years old, if not older. The brand is Coolerator.

thank you in advanced for any suggestions.

Unplug it and pull the unit from the cabinet. You may want help if it's a big unit. Look at the outdoor coil, is it clogged with dust and dirt? If it is take it outside vacuum and wash with water and foaming cleaner if you can get this at an a/c supply house.

A clogged/blocked coil makes the compressor work harder, heat up, and shut off on internal overload.

If that is not the problem it maybe the capacitor. But check the coil first and write back.
