If you just don't have the money at the moment it will work you just wont get the SEER rating.

You will get many different answers to this question. Some will say replace the condenser, others will say replace the condenser and coil, and still others will say replace everything.
Ok, the short answer is yes. You can just replace the condensing unit, however, you may not get the full seer rating. Part of that seer increase is due to bigger coils in both the condensing unit and the evaporator. If your existing coil is in good condition and not leaking, and the new equipment uses the same refrigerant (likely r22), you should be Ok.

Thanks. Seems like aside from an effiiency issue, it will work. I'm just concerned that it will lead to failure and breakdown.

Dont know where you are as to how long or much you run the AC. If a long time and the way power cost is going. Might look into a seer of 15. Then you can get a tax credit from the IRS.

and echo the other posts.
But I'd also check into adding a TXV to the indoor coil if you don't already have one.
