Here's where I show my ignorance of chain saws. I want to buy a new chain for my 16" Stihl chain saw. Do all 16" chains fit all 16" saws or do I need a chain made specifically to fit Stihl?

Take the old chain w/ you so can get exact same length and pitch.

They're not all the same. I agree, take the old one and make sure the pitch is correct. Some pre-packed saw chains have a list on the back of the package that says what saws it should fit.

Yes, pitch is important but gauge is just as important. The gauge is the width of the drivers and must match the gauge of the bar. The three areas of concern when replacing a saw chain are: Pitch (distance between rivets); Gauge (width of drivers); And driver count. Once you have these set, you will then have to decide on which type cutter you'd like.

Thanks for the answers! I suspected it wasn't as easy as just buying a 16" chain with the type cutter I wanted.
