I have been using a 6000 BTU AC for about a week and last night it strted making some funny, very annoying noises. It was working fine and cooling, but it sort of sounded like there was water in the unit.. I wasn't completely sure, but when I turned it off, as the fan slowed down it sounded like it was moving through water.
I realized the unit wasnt at much of an angle, so i adjusted it so that water could drip out, but it didnt seem to make a difference. It cooled all night, but made it difficult to sleep.
The sound is almost like very soft rain falling on the outside (no it was not raining last night:-P).

Any ideas?

A lot of units will do this! it is normal!

You were on the right track. Check drain holes. Also there may be an accumulation of crud in the bottom of the pan that is preventing the water from properly flowing to where it can get out.

Most window shakers will use the condensor fan to sling water up to travel through the coil and aid in cooling it. Perfecty normal. Usually.

but i dont think its normal to hear the gurgling sound the entire time the ac is on....
tow_guy - where are the drain holes? back on bottom?
how do i get to the pan to see if its clogged? take apart the ac? Ihave never done it...but i imagine its not too difficult to take apart and put together is it?

Just take the outside cover off. You can see where the water runs. From the inside coil to the outside coil. there the fan sling will pick it up and sling it into the outdoor coil. This is done
to get the water out AND it also helps cool the hot condenser coil there. To help give you a higher SEER

so i just take the ac out of the window and can simply unscrew or slide off the outside cover nd see if there is a build up of excess water?

There you go.Make sure the small water tube from front to back is clean.

And what ever you do, DO NOT drill a hole to drain the water.
