I am trying to grow basil indoors.... again. I don't dare try it outside due to wildlife nibbling and temperature fluxuations.

Any tips for basil specifically? I bought three smallish plants from two different stores. Should I put them all in one pot? Is the south full exposure window a good place for them or is it too much? How often to water? Basil has always failed for me in the past - is 8300 ft, no matter the pampering, just too high?

I also purchased a small mint plant. Catnip grows like a weed in the flower garden (planted by accident), so I have hope the mint will do well indoors, and hope the cat won't mistake it for catnip. Any advice on this herb? It seems to be one of those "abuse it and it shall thrive" plants.

My thumb is getting greener but I am still fairly clumsy and unscientific with gardening so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Basil, like other mints, is a sun-loving plant. Use well-drained, rich potting soil. Check the pH every four to six weeks. Keep pH at 6 - 7 with organic fertilizer at half the recommended rate stated on label. Keep soil moist and not soggy. Water and then empty the saucer beneath so plants do not stand in water. If you don't have a sunny window, you can use a fluorescent light for 10-12 hours daily. Corsican mint does not require full sun and can tolerate shade.
