My tub leaks when i drain it. It leaks only when draining and when it leaks, it leaks in the wall. They gave me an estimate of 475.00 to cut the wall and to fix it. He said i needed a new waste thing... Is that high? 475.00. It was roto rooter. I live in FL

No plumbing access panel on the other side of the wall?

Get a couple more quotes to assure you are being fairly priced.

In Florida, where i live and run my plumbing buisness, you won't find many tubs with a access panel unless they have a pump for jets.

Is the Tub on the ground floor? Depending on the situation i would probably bid it myself around $225 if it is a normal situation. Sometimes they fill concrete around the bottom of the waste. If that is the case it could be a little harder going. I'd have to see it to make an accurate estimate of it.

Roto Rooter tends to be on the high side for pricing from what i've seen.

Where I live and all the houses I have been involved with and all the homebuilder associations I have been involved in over the years, plumbing access is standard.

Getting multiple bids is important. Everyone knows that plumbers have trip charges and fees just to show up and then there all the hourly charges and fees for materials and any extra labor. If you live in an area like I do where there is one plumber, then you have no choice. He lives in the neighborhood where all the doctors and lawyers live. Get the picture!

Get multiple estimates and you will find an honest plumber. Real plumbers can be awesome people. We've had many here over the years. Sensitive, understanding, and fair. Of course, they never discussed price here. I have a part-time plumber that I can call for my rental. Just don't want to be bothered. Have to remove toilet lid to flush toilet because handle broke. Simple fix. I could do it myself. But, it's a rental. I don't want to be bothered.

Not all problems are straight forward. Once you tear into a job, you can find all kinds of cans of worms. So finding someone to give you an estimate up front may be a problem. The best bet to find a reliable plumber is to ask family and friends and coworkers.
