i just gutted my bathroom and when installing the new vanity i noticed that the trap i bought has a 1-1/4" extension. how do i connect it to the 1-1/2" copper drain pipe coming out of the wall?

You'll have to use a 1.5" copper X 1.25" tubular rubber gasket with hose clamps on each side....their grey.

That is the easiest way. Other way is to solder on a fitting and convert it over.

Best answer? get rid of the 1.25" trap and get a 1.5" trap which will connect to the 1.25" sink drain as well as the 1.5" coming out of the wall. :)
Might have to solder on a 1.5" brass trap adapter though on the copper pipe.

The 1 1/4" lav trap is the standard size for lavs. At the box stores, there will be bagged plastic drain fittings that have everything to plumb a lav drain. These usually have 2 plastic gaskets - one to attach to 1 1/4" drain pipe coming out of the wall and one for 1 1/2" drain pipe. You just slip the proper gasket in while assembling, tighten the nut and you're good to go.

Actually..1.25" is allowed, but 1.5" tubular traps are the standard. The 2 gaskets you refer to allow you to connect to the lav drain, not what is coming out of the wall.. And you still have to find a way to connect it to the funky copper coming out of the wall.

Unless i read you wrong somewhere Formula. This could be an area specific case as well. Im pretty sure i am just misreading you.

Could just be where i live. Inidana and Florida are pretty far apart :)

1"1/4 pipe,to a 1"1/2>1"1/4 reducer to 1"1/2 pipe to a mcalpine 1"1/2 straight(fitting with plastic nuts),if all that won`t fit in push 1"1/4 pipe into the copper seal with silicone, it usually holds.and try a ajustable trap .
