My older White Westinghouse a/c window unit acts like it is overheating. It violently shuts off and blows hot during the hottest part of the day (direct sun). It will eventually cool off and starts blowing cold again. I can shade and put a fan on the unit outside and it works better. Should I spend the money for a technician to come out or just buy a new one? Thanks in advance!

sounds like it's over heating on you.

Have the unit ever been taken out and cleaned inside? Is there air blowing out of the back of the unit?

I keep the filter and fins clean but I never took it out. Too much trouble. There is plenty of hot air coming out of the back. My problem only happens in direct sun when the outside temp is over 89 degrees.

Sounds like you are due for it to come out, and give it a good cleaning. If you can't do it, then hire in someone to do it. Also a chance to oil the motor if has oil port.

Yes, those condenser coils on the windows units get blocked up. You cannot see how bad they really are unless you pull the cover. Like Jay said, the unit must come out. Those coils really should be cleaned on a regular basis--- at least once a year.

I pulled out the unit and took it apart. I would say that the inside condenser was about 80% blocked. I cleaned everything and it works like a champ. Thanks to everyone for the great information!

Ok, I spoke too soon. I checked on my unit this afternoon and one of the internal tanks and tubing is totally encapsulated in ice. It still blows cold but weak. Did I mess something up when I cleaned it?

Did you see any oil port?

My guts are telling that the motor (Fan) is not runing full speed, otherwise, you may be low on charge... If that's the case, then it's almost best to retire it and get a new unit.
