I have an older Hotpoint gas oven. The oven door will not stay in the full open position (door swings shut to the special stop position where you can remove it). Is there an adjustment on the hinges to make the door stay open? (The range is level--checked that first). Thanks for your help!

Hello dpete11 and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and to the Gas Appliances topic.

If I am understanding the problem description correctly, the door opens horizontally? (left to right or right to left) As a microwave oven door does.

Or, does the door open vertically? (up and down like a garage door?)

If the door opens horizontally, like a microwave ovens door, the hinge(s) may be loose, bent, not tightened equally, out of adjustment (if an adjustment is possible) and or damaged some how.

Or, the door frame, where the hinges attach, is out of alignment or not true. Even though the appliance is level, an out of alignment (squared - true) frame where the hinges attach will cause the door to self close or not remain fully opened.

Most likely, the hinges themselves are simply worn out. Replacement likely to resolve the condition, providing the door frame is squared. (true)

Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be based upon that specific brand and model. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.

Cautionary Reminder Note:
Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.

It is a standard free-standing range, and the door opens down. You're probably right about the hinges worn out. It is an older unit. Thanks for your help!

Hello: dpete11

Since the door opens down wards, top to bottom, why the door does not remain in the fully opened position is beyond me. ????

The doors own weight pulls it down wards and will hold it wide open due to the doors own weight. Which is why there are indents built into the brackets to allow the door to partially open, not fully close nor drop down into the fully opened position.

Nor are the door springs capable if fully closing the door, when the door is fully opened. The doors own weight exceeds the spring tension.

However, if you state the door does not remain fully opened, must be so. I have just never encountered a top to bottom opening oven door, in the fully opened position, self closing.

You stated it was an "older" Hotpoint range. Probably a spring has broken.
