Hello,
I wanted to know if there is any way a person can tell, which screw on the gas valve, for a hot (tank type)water heater is the pilot adjustment screw?
They have different types out there and was wondering if the screw size are all the same or if there is a way of finding out. I was reading about how ansi requires a turn down test and wanted to be able to properly perform this test.I am a certified hvacr technician but have not worked on many water heaters. All the information I find concerns the basics and as far as adjusting the pilot,it says to follow the manufactures recommendations. Which when reading the booklets that come with the water heater says nothing about the turn down test or which screw is the pilot adjusting screw or how to identify it.
I thank you in advance, for any and all information.

Why do you want to do this? The pilot on a water heater almost never needs adjustment. The manufacturer would provide this information in the installation and service manual if adjustment is necessary. Consult their website. Also consult the website for the gas valve....Robertshaw or whatever .....for a manual on the valve.

Most water heater gas valves do not have a pilot adjustment screw. The flame size is controlled by the pilot orifice size. The ANSI turndown test requires putting a needle valve in the pilot line to reduce the gas flow.

Hey,
first off,I want to do this because it is proper procedure and ansi regulations.there are two regulations that concern me.
1.Turn down test (which i know how to perform)
2. Lock out test (which i also know how to perform)
I know that on some gas valves there is a little cap that one removes by unscrewing it.Under this cap is the adjustment screw for the piolt valve. I'm basically interested in gaining knowledge about the variuos types of valves.I'm a certified technician and just trying to further my knowledge in this area of the field.I appreciate any and all replies and thank you. Most home owner booklets and installation material don't cover this type of information.I'm hopeing to find a web site or info leading me to a place that does get into detailed information. This web site has been pretty good and am hoping that one of the moderators will be willing to help me out with some literature,a link or whatever knowledge i can get.

Apparently this is something which applies to large industrial equipment; in which case it seems there should be manuals provided by the manufacturer of the equipment, or the manufacturer of the gas valve. I do not have any other reference to suggest, except perhaps ANSI itself has literature available.

Hey,
thank you for the reply,I appreciate the response. This does not have anything to do with large industrial type water heaters. I'll continue to search for the needed information.
thank you again
