Gardening and Horticulture - re: patio weed

Dear All,

We have a interlocking concrete/brick paving stones patio. In between the bricks/stones we have weeds coming constantly. We don't walk around the patio much during the week. The only time we use is weekend. Any preventive sprays that I can use to avoid these weeds coming here?

There are a variety of products that would work for your situation.Some are contact killers with little or no residual effect others have residual effects of varying lengths.There are concentrates and prediluted products.There are weed only killers,grass only killers or nonselective products that kill most any plant type.

Go to a hardware store or garden center and consult qualified sales help to assist you in making a choice that best suits your needs and specific situation.

Since the variety of options is fairly wide I won't go into a specific recommendation.It would be dependant upon exactly what your specific circumstances and expectations are.

Broadleaf weed killer will kill weeds. If you also have grass coming up between pavers, a non-selective herbicide will kill everything. If using non-selective, apply when wind is not blowing and to get it on any desirable plants in the area. Depending on what you are trying to eradicate, it may take repeat applications of non-selective herbicide.

If you'd prefer not to use chemicals you can get rid of them by pouring boiling water on them. Or you could hand-pull them and then sweep sand into the spaces between the pavers, wet it down and get it in there really good. That will help keep them from coming up again. But really, Round-up probably works as well as anything else.

Keep in mind that round up kills what it is sprayed on but has no lasting effect meaning you'll have to regularly apply it over a season.There are now "extended" versions of round up and several other products that offer longer lasting control but issues such as run-off/desireable plant exposure must be considered.Talk to qualified sales help at a hardware store or garden center.Big boxes carry "some" of the products but offer no real assistance in picking the best one.
