Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Lawn Boy Model 10323 - Rear drive problem

I have a '99 model self-propelled (rear drive) mower with a drive problem on the left rear wheel. Prior to developing this problem, this wheel would not free-wheel when I wanted to pull it backwards. Then, it quit the poer drive. The other rear wheel works fine. Is anyone familiar with what part of the assembly has likely failed?

There is a little rocker type key that is activated by a friction washer that engages the the drive gear. It could just need to be cleaned as it may be stuck in a position that will not engage the drive gear. That could also be what caused it lock in reverse as it could have been sticking in the engaged position.

Take the wheel off, and you will see a spring clip ("E" type) holding the gear on the axle. Remove the clip and take the gear off of the axle to inspect the drive key and actuator. Take a note (or better a picture) of how everything is assembled so you can get it put back together correctly.

Thanks. I found a schematic of the assembly online and have ordered a replacement "friction ring" and "clutch washer". These seem to be the only parts that wear. I have verified (with the wheel off and all the other parts removed) that the axle turns when the drive lever is depressed with the engine running. The "rocking key" simply doesn't do anything. I can see on the other rear wheel what it is supposed to do. It just doens't do anything. I'm hoping the parts I've ordered do the trick. I can't see anything else that would cause the problem. But then again, I've disassemble and reassembled the other side and couldn't discern a difference in the friction ring and clutch washer. I guess I'll know when the parts come in and I put them on.

I replaced the "friction ring" and "clutch washer" and it works like new.
