Hi,
we have retired a few yrs ago, and almost never home during the and holidays. We are looking for a digital controller for our gas water heater so we can program the water heater and turn it off when leaving easily instead of going to the basement.
Please provide us with any familiar products.

I've never heard of any type of timer to do as you're describing. Most gas water heaters can not be adapted to do this. The only way it would be possible is to break the current to the thermocouple in which case you would have to relight the pilot every time you return.
I'm afraid you're stuck backing down the thermostat manually.

You don't mention if your water heater is power vented. If it is power vented and if the Circuit breaker panel is on your main floor you could possibly shut off the power to it at the panel. It might also be possible to have an electrician install a wall switch somewhere on your main floor. If it is a conventional style tank (does not use hydro) then the only way is to go downstairs to the tank and turn it down.
