Hi
I started my Sears XL1000 riding lawn tractor for the first time after sitting all winter and it is smoking from the exhaust/muffler area. It is running fine, except for the smoking. Can anyone help diagnose the problem
Thank you, appreciate your help.

First off we need to know the type/model engine and what color smoke. Most times, the cause is overfull of oil due to gasoline dilution but other areas to check are clogged breather, blown head gasket, bad rings, etc, etc. I would check the oil level first and make sure it is not overfull and does not smell of gasoline.

Thanks. It is a Briggs & Stratton engine and the smoke is gray.

Grey/blue smoke suggests it's burning oil. If the engine has been tipped, oilk may have worked up into the cylinder, valves, etc. I would suggest you let it run for a few minutes and see if the smoke clears up. Could be just oil in the muffler, etc. which should burn off in a few minutes.
