I have a downstairs stand alone shower. There is no basement so this is sitting on concrete. The caulking/tiles on a corner have cracked and allowed water to seep into the wall. When my son leaned back against this wall, I ended up with a sizeable hole. I have peeled back and removed most of the soaked drywall, and am not using that shower to let it dry out.

My question is whether I can simply caulk the crack in the shower and replace the drywall, or whether this is going to have to be a more extensive job that I will have to hire out.

I've got pictures of what the damage looks like:

Any advice appreciated.

It's a bit unclear to me. Is the hole in the drywall on the opposite side of the tile wall? Or is the hole in the tiled shower?

If this is the opposite side of the wall you can remove the drywall and replace it. There must be dozens of post here that tell you how to do that. If this is in the tile wall then you should use someone else. And you should have the whole shower redone because drywall is not a good tile substrate and you will have more problems in the future. Have someone put tile backer board up and have them do everything that it takes to assure a water tight installation. I'm not a tile man so I won't advise further.

Looks like from the photos that the hole is on the outside of the shower. There must be a considerable amount of water getting through the crack. That shouldnt happen even with a crack in the tile. So you probably have to rip that shower out and redo. You can cut a big hole in the outside wall, you will have to do that anyway to repair, and see what is used for tile backer and how damaged that is. Then you will know.
