I am getting ready to install 3/4 inch hickory. I removed the sticky tiles that used to be on the floor and the subfloor I pretty flat except for a few dips here and there. The old subfloor has a thin layer of adhesive residue,,, Should I tear up this old plywood and put in new? I know that 15 lb felt goes over the subfloor but I'm a little worried about any leveling compound not sticking very well. I don't want to build this floor up any higher with another layer of plywood because as it is, I got good transition between other rooms and materials.

Ideally, you should start a new hardwood floor on the original subfloor(and rosin paper is an alternative to felt). But you should also shoot for all adjoining floors to be even with the new floor. Your call. It sounds like you have a plan, go for it. Not sure to what you are referring as to floor leveler???

What's the leveling compound for, if your over wood.
