I am about to remove and replace the deck boards on my home deck. It is about 15 years old and the guy that installed it, just used regular nails. I have them popping up all over the place an dthe boards are twisting too.
Question; Which product is recomended today? Good old treated lumber or some of the composites that I read about?
Thanks and take care
Dan

At 15 years old, I would be concerned about the framing as well as the deck boards. 15 years is pretty old for deck framing. You could replace just the deck boards (using PT or a composite), but in 5 years you'll be replacing the ENTIRE deck because the joists are rotten. Once you start pulling up deck boards, you'll be able to see the top edge of the joists. I'm betting that you'll find that they are starting to rot.

I would plan on replacing the joists as well as the deck boards, and once the new joists are in place, cover the tops of them with Vycor before you install the deck boards.

Wood or composite?? That depends on where you're at, what your budget is, and how often you want to do this.

On the left coast, the PT we can get is not suitable for deck boards. That leaves redwood and composites. Composites run between $2 and $3 per linear foot. Redwood is about $2.50 a foot and up. With all of the maintenance involved with wood, everybody around here opts for composite.

The right coast is different. PT there is usually SYP and it makes for a fine deck board. It's cost is less than a composite, so it might make some sense to go that route.
