Our new steps are finished.
The next step is replacing the 4 porch posts.
After that, new railings for the steps and porch will be installed.
See site below for photos.
Thanks to all for the good advice on how to dimension the steps.

Ken, what are you replacing the porch posts with? Going back with large round, or scaling down in size?

Larry,
I am planning to use 4x4's covered with vinyl sleeves for the posts. Also am going with the vinyl railing system from Lowes. The posts at the bottom of the steps will also be covered with the vinyl sleeves with railing on the steps as well.
What do you think of my plan?

Sounds like you got a plan. Do the column sleeves come with decorative bases and capitals, or will you terminate them directly on the brick surface? Just wondering since you have the fluted decorative columns now.

Yes, decorative bases and capitals (same for both) are available and will be used.
I am stumped on how to attach the posts at the top and bottom since the sleeve will already be on the post when the post is installed. I was thinking of a 1/4 lag screw into the bottom of the post with the screw head removed and the screw then would drop into a hole drilled into the concrete. Then perhaps a metal bracket at the top which would be covered by the top trim piece.
The rail products are described at the link below:

I think my wife has assigned a challenging project this time! Thank goodness for this forum!

The pin block will work, but I would use two, since the post may tend to twist using only one. The top could be angle screwed into your support then covered up with the capital.

Larry,
Thanks for the idea. I think it is the way to go.
We will be raising the overhead structure slightly during removal of the old posts and installation of the new. We plan to use a jack post for this. It worked before when we changed out the original metal scrollwork posts for the fluted ones we have now.
I hope I can find four "straight" 4x4's, otherwise the sleeves will be difficult to install. Wish me luck.
Well, its off to the cabinet shop for a few hours and then to the big box to get sand mix to dress the rough spots on the sides and front of the steps.
Thanks again. Have a nice day!
