Maytag washer will not spin or agitage. I can set the dial and when I shut the top lid - it hums like it is trying to start. Wife said when it first did it she smelled a electrical burn smell??

I also can not spin the drum by hand (not sure if I could do that even if it wasn't working).

Any suggestions on what may be the problem and what to look for would be greatly appreciated!

was able to look elsewhere on the internet for some ideas on what it could be. turned out that the water pump was "broke". not quite seized, but most of the fins inside the pump that move water have broke off and one was trapping the pump. replaced the pump at a cost of under $100.
