I recently bought a house and the downstairs ceiling fan does not work though the light for the fan does work just fine. Upon inspection of the wiring in the housing, everything seems to be in order. There is a fan and light control receiver resting on the bracket. I copied down the model number and looked it up online for instructions and it's a universal fan and light remote control. However, there is no remote control for the fan, only a light switch and fan switch on the wall. I understand that the dip settings on the receiver need to match the remote control (transmitter) since I have that kind of setup in my master bedroom upstairs. Do I need a universal remote since I can't find dip switches on my light/fan switch on the wall when I removed the panel and looked inside? Light works using both the pull-chain and switch on the wall, fan doesn't work either way. Any other suggestions? Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Ok, found the universal remote. Thought there had to be one so I checked the back of one of our kitchen drawers and sure enough it is there. However, fan still does not work. I can hear something inside the receiver "click" when I push on one of the fan settings on the remote but nothing happens. Tried even using the pull-chain since the instructions say to have it in the HIGH position (can't tell what position it is in since it doesn't work with pull-chain) but still nothing happens. Light still works fine on the remote. Any suggestions?

If the remote control can turn on and off the light, then it's not the code, since the same code works for both. And it's not the remote transmitter battery either.

Some other possibilities: (1) The fan motor is shot, (2) The pull chain still isn't set on high. As you said, you can't really tell where it is set, but there's only four possibilities so you can just try four times. (3) The wiring to the fan has become disconnected. (4) There's a wall switch somewhere that needs to be turned on.

Personally, I think (1) is the most likely. Luckily, fan's are pretty inexpensive, and not that hard to replace (if you're methodical, record the old connections before you take the old one down, and carefully reconnect the new one the same way).

I am thinking it is possibility 1 too. I tried possibility 2 and nothing happens. I do hear something clicking when I try each setting using the remote that I believe is coming from the receiver so that makes me believe that it can't be possibility 3. And I don't think it's four since the wall switch works for the light switch and the receiver is made for a remote control transmitter. If it is the fan motor, would there be anything about it by looking at it that I will be certain that it is indeed the culprit?

Just because you hear a click from the receiver does not rule out #3. The receiver has separate output wires for the fan motor and the fan light. If the fan motor output wire is disconnected, the receiver can still be trying to turn it on.

If the fan motor is shot, it's time for a new fan.
