hi there, we have opened up an existing fireplace in our top floor flat but the problem being that we have dicovered there is no original constructional hearth. basically i need to know how difficult it will be to replace the constructional hearth and aslo where to get or what material i will use. i have bought an arched cast iron fireplace which has a small sized hearth . any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Your local building code office can tell you what materials are required for hearth construction in your area for the type of stove you plan on using. Many areas require household appliance permits for woodstoves and factory-built fireplaces installed in an existing dwelling. Also, getting the chimney inspected is highly recommended for safety reasons.
