We have been planning on replacing the carpet in our den with laminate flooring. Beneath the carpet is a concrete slab. The carpet actually came up fine, along with the top carpet pad. However, beneath the expected (multicolored) carpet pad was a black, rubber type, of carpet pad. This appears to be glued down. I was advised by someone at the flooring store to use a floor scraper to scrape this bottom pad off--but this is proving almost impossible. Most of the time the floor scraper just bounces over the top, doing very litte in the way of removing the pad. Any ideas on how to get this carpet pad up? Was wondering about using a heat gun to loosen the adhesive or some type of adhesive remover.

Use utility knife to cut pad into strips as you go. Heat gun and scraper should help with carpet cushion and adhesive removal.

It sounds to me as if there was originally a cushion back glued down floor and whoever pulled it up didn't bother to remove the cushion that was left and just went over it. A four inch razor scraper will do the job. A normal floor scraper isn't sharp enough to carve the stuff off and will do the bouncing across the floor thing you describe.

Use a " inch flooring razor scraper.

Buy lots of extra blades and change blades frequently as the concrete dulls them.

Use both hands on the scraper, one at the back end and the other at the hilt near the blade using alot of downward and forward pressure to keep the scraper flat to the concrete floor while using both hands to push foreward. Bite into the padding a little at a time, like a quarter to half a scraper width at a time, not all at once and it will be easier.

Use extreme caution in doing this as the blades are razor charp. Even the best floor men need stitches from this type of work from time to time.

Yes it is time consuming and a pain.

Its the best way to remove it though.

If it becomes to problematic or imposible, hire a local flooring professional.

They are experienced in efficient work methods and do this daily.

I agree, this is on your knees work. Those stand up scrapers are useless. You have no leverage to keep pressure downward on a stand up.

4 inch razor scraper. It is easier to scrape side to side in a cresent around in front, with both hands on the tool, instead of out in front of you going outward away from you.
