Does the breaker trip when you flip the switch? Did this ever work or is it a new install? Tell us all the wires in the switch box and the fixture box.

Also tell us HOW you connected those wires, as you either did so incorrectly or have some other problem.

You have not supplied complete information on the wiring at the light. Tell us what cables exist, and what wires are in those cables. Tell us how those wires are connected.
You have not provided any information on the switch box wiring. Tell us what cables exist in the switch box and what wires are in those cables. Tell us how those wires are connected.
The most likely explanation is that you failed to connect the new light up in the same manner as the old light, and that you failed to properly wire up a switch loop. However, without you answering the questions that have been asked, we can't help.

Susan,
I presume this is a one way switch configuration we are talking about here, or possibly two way?
If so it should have four terminals that are labelled COMMON - 1-2- LOOP, but you are indicating that you have 4 ACTIVE wires, 2 NEUTRAL wires and 1 EARTH wire all in or near the same terminal? I am just curious as to if your partner had inadvertently wired up a MASTER ON switch as part of the lighting circuit, which means that it renders another switch useless in turning off your light.
Regards,
Geeza

I think you are in UK by your descritions. This site is mostly visted by North Americans. We still might be able to help you.
If blue and brown are from the fixture then what you need is blue to the black earth(neutral) and brown to the switched wire from your switch. I can't tell from your description which wire that might be. Probably one of the red ones??
