My house was built in 1952. I am in the process of re doing my kitchen. I have to take down the soffitts and some walls. I currently have plaster. There is gypsum type of board, then metal mesh topped by plaster. Does anyone know if they use to use abstestos in this type years ago?

Is there metal lath over all the gypsum lath or only in the angles?
:Probably there is not asbestos in the plaster but plasterers were and still are known for tinkering with the mix. If there is asbestos in it it is probably not much. I'd worry as much about plaster dust as the asbestos.
To be sure test.

Still no way to say for sure about the asbestos. What you have is a typical and very good system of lath and plaster. The gypsum lath is a very good plaster base. it is far superior to wood lath. The metal lath (not lathe) angle reinforcement is very typical. Once the plaster was set and dried it became almost impossible to separate the plaster from the lath. The base coat is gypsum plaster, what you are calling cement and what you are calling plaster is the finish coat. If it is smooth it is most likely a lime-gauging plaster called whitecoat. In a kitchen it could be lime and Keene's cement.
This is more information than you asked for. You are very fortunate to have such a well made house.

I thank you for the fast response and better yet for the explanation of the walls. Unfort I have to take down two of these plaster walls in my kitchen because of plumbing and so forth (not happy about that) but yes I am happy with the rest of teh house and how the walls are built. I guess I will just be on the safe side and where a mask. Someone else told me that they didnt use abstestos in that type of plaster but they made the same comment you did "you never know what these guys added on there own"
