I recently replaced an old ceiling fan by installing a Hampton Bay 4-light ceiling fan, and followed the directions carefully. After turning it on, the fan rotated but only 2 of the 4 lights came on. I switched the bulbs to make sure they weren't burnt out, and still only the same two lights came on (lights are in alternating positions, not next to each other). Is there a wiring problem? When I wired it, I followed the directions: black/blue wires connect to hot black wire, white wire connects to white wire, green wire connects to ground (old house w/o ground, so I only connected to mounting bracket; same connection as the replaced ceiling fan).

Sounds like a wire is disconnected in the fan somewhere. If it's not obvious and easy to fix then take it back.

The light fixture may be like mine and the pull chain sequences two lights with one pull, the other two lights with another pull and all 4 lights with a third pull, then off.

Larry, that a possibility I hadn't thought of. Thanks for posting it. Of course, I hope the original poster read the directions, which would certainly indicate if this is the case.

Chandler and Racraft are probably right. Especially back in the 70's-80's fan
lights operated like that. I'm not sure if they make them any more like that
but maybe. Do you know the fan model name? That would be a huge help
since Hampton Bay makes all kinds of different styles of fans out there today.

..Goodluck.

It turns out that it was the pull chain sequence, and after alternating, all 4 lights came on with the 3rd pull. Unfortunately the directions only provide enough to install the light kit and no instructions to operate the lights. This model was Hampton Bay Carriage House II 52'', and I had already taken the first one back, so thanks for the responses!!

Glad it worked out, and you didn't have to return this one.

I learned something on this one too.
