hello, first time for me on doityourself.com . I was wondering if anybody can help me with my greensand/water softner . it's been 2 years that the company who sold me those machines is trying to solve my problem. every time that they come to fix my machines, the water is ok for about 2-3 days and after that it comes yellow. >Seems that the potasium greensand doesn't clean itself properly because the potasium level doesn't go down. The company made me bye a new pump so the filters would regenerate. Was wondering if i can do something myself to make my filter work ok.

Did you ask (they tell you) what they did when they serviced your filter? We don't use greensand filter anymore because of continuous service calls and disappointing results. The brine solution is problematic and the media seems to be short-lived.

What kind of pump did the make yo buy? Was it a jet pump, deep well pump? What was their reason, not enough pressure?

Unfortunately, you may need some further remedies inclusing rebedding the filter or changing the equipment completely.

Hi, thanks for the reply, every time they come here they never tell me what they did. (I'm not sure that they know what they're doing.) They made me by a jet pump
(GOULDS model #J5) . They said that i need potasium to get rid of the smell in the water so i had to by that pump so the filters could wash properly. 2 years ago they put me a brine and they changed that for a greensand because the filters didn't want to clean properly (needed a deep well pump). It's been 6 years that they try to fix my problem(s) but doesn't seem to go in the good way. They are coming thi week for changing the greensand in the filter (he thinks that the sand is saturated)
Its supose to be good for 5-6 years (only 2 years).Dont know if i have to change of company because i'm going to start over again with another company and i'm kind of scared to be ripped off again.
Thank you for your time Andy.

One thing I forgot tommention was, what is the purpose of the greensand filter? Hydrogen sulfide? Iron? Sediment? Manganese? What symptoms are you having that it is NOT working?

I am afraid that you are chasing bad money with good. If you can afford to delay that service call, get your water tested by a local water professional or two.

There may be a simple and better way to correct these problems you are having.

Jet pumps can't psuh very much water at a time so pressure may be affected. Greensand and other filter media need to be thoroughly lifted during the backwashing stage.

As mentioned previously, I don't care much for greensand applications. Sometimes a simple filter and a softener can eliminate certain problems.
