I have a friend who had his kitchen done last fall, and has some drywall compound left. He said I can take it off his hand since I am putting sheetrock up in my garage. He has kept it out in his unheated garage all winter, and I question of this is something i should pass up on? We had temps down to -20 at times over the winter.

Leave it with your friend.... leftover mud tends to get crusty/lumpy/moldy and a pain to work with... At $12/5 gallons - it's too cheap to be frugal with......

Thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure if the mud will be good sitting out in the freezing garage for 3 months or not..

If your friend left any latex paint he might have used in his project in the same conditions it is no good as well.

More then likely it's junk even if it dosen't have clumps in it, old compound won't bond well to the drywall paper resulting in a poor finnish.

As Zster said, the stuff's too cheap to take a chance. Buy your own.

Thanks for the advise guys. Off to the store to get the sheetrock, and a fresh bucket of mud!

I once opened a 5gal bucket of mud that was about the same age and wished I had never opened it. Smelld like rotten milk or something of the sort.
If I don't end up using it all I give the rest away or leave it open to dry out and trash it.
