Hello Ed. Welcome to the Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
If you are positive you did not leave any leaks after replacing the igniter, the original gas odor is still present, the gas odor may be coming out the orifice. When this happens, not all that uncommon by the way, the entire gas control valve must be replaced.
The cause is the internal gas shut off valve, which stops (shuts off) gas from flowing through the valve out to the burner, internal gas shut off valve is worn out or the valve seat is worn out and/or defective.
In the above condition, a tiny amount of gas leaks passes through the internal shut off valve of the control valve and leaks out of the orifice to the burner. This condition will not correct itself nor can the control be fixed. Entire control valve must be replaced.
Be sure no leaks exist where you removed the union nut to remove the gas control valve. Also check the connection at the back of the dryer where the half inch black iron inlet pipe is connected to the gas supply. Often a tiny leak can develop there when removing the control valve to install anew igniter.
Reminder Note:
Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs or services. Always check for gas leaks whenever moving the appliance and/or a service or repair includes any connection of a gas part.
