The bulb in my exterior light post burns out after it rains or after a foggy night. Is there a coating that can be applied to the bulb and/or fixtures, or is it time to replace the lantern? A clerk at the local Home Depot informed that I can use a regular bulb.

The person at HD may be correct, but it is not good practice to listen too closely to their advice.
Even a small drip on a hot bulb will cause it to break, is this what is happening??? Is the fixture leaking??? If yes, check to make sure things are tight and the top part does not have holes. It may be time for a new fixture.

There are specific types of light bulbs for outdoor fixtures that have the coating on them as you suggested.Obviously the "expert" at Home Depot didn't know this and it may be HD doesn't stock them because they don't sell a million of them a day or they do stock them but the help doesn't know it.

As stated in the previous post, water contact on a hot bulb will cause it to fail regardless of bulb type so if this is happening it must be corrected.

Otherwise do yourself a favor and shop at a real hardware store.
