Hi, I bought a used Maytag gas Range from a friend and I'm having problems with the oven not staying lit. It sat unused for 3 or so years but was used very little before that. The burners all work fine, the oven glow igniter will glow red and the burner starts but as soon as the igniter goes out the burner goes out also. After a few minutes the igniter comes back on and the burn starts and goes off again. Also the top of the oven and the cook top seems to stay very warm even while not being used, is this normal?

Model CRG9300cal

Thanks, Jerry

Hello Jerry and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and the Gas Appliances topic.

Oven burner and igniter are suppose to cycle on and off.
Igniter will turn on and is suppose to remain on the entire time the burner is on, until the temp is reached. Then and only then will the igniter turn off.

Burner should remain on until oven set temp is reached. As should the HSI. Hot Surface (Glow) Igniter.

Based upon what you posted, if the set temp is reached, the oven is working correctly. HSI turns off which then turns off burner, when temp is reached.

If you watch the HSI glowing, and it cycles on and off, it is suppose to. HSI is not suppose to turn off after burner lights. Both are suppose to remain on. Until temp is reached.

So what needs to be known is: Is the temp being reached or not?

Hello, thanks for the reply. The burner only stays lit for only a few seconds maybe 5 to 10 then goes out. The temperature is not reached as it only burns for a few seconds. Here's what happens, the igniter glows, after about 5 seconds the burner lits, the igniter then stops glowing after maybe 10 to 15 seconds total, as soon as the igniter goes out the burner goes out to, maybe 2 to 3 minutes later the cycle starts all over again. I don't think the oven could possible heat up that fast.

Thanks Jerry

Hello Jerry
How long time takes to light up the oven burner since you turn the oven on? If it takes more then a minute, then the igniter is bad (even if does glow) and it has to be replaced. It is a pretty simple job and you probably can do it yourself. The igniter for $39.95 you can buy here: http://click.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com/fs-bin/click?xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx&offerid=122738.561169926&type=xxxxxxxxxxx
