I need to build a concrete retainer wall for my driveway, that will be 3' high and 8" wide. I need to know how deep and wide I need my footer

If you try to build a rigid retaining wall call you local bulding code off to find out the frost depth requirements.

A concrete retaining wall with a footing would be quite difficult and expensive.

Consider a segmental concrete retaining wall. It is a gravity wall that does not have footing. It is the type of wall used by municipalites when they re-grade and install new sidewalks and widen streets. You can usually build 4' high without an engineers plan.

thanks Dick I was wondering if I needed a footing. do I need to just go below the frost line or do I also need a depth to match my height as well. Keith

For segmental walls, go to the wb site of one of the major brands - Allan Block, Anchor Wall Systems, Keystone, Rockwood or VersaLok. They all have good examples and construction info.

Several of the brands shold be available near you.

you just need to go deep enough to give lateral stability to the first course.
