Read an article at the following website dealing with the issues of soft water (http://www.triangularwave.com/f7.htm). Hopefully some of the forum pros will chime in.

First of all, that article was posted by a company that SELLS alternative methods of water treatment. So they are motivated to make statements like that. They actually encourage people to use their electric water conditioner and you will be able to find hundreds of article describing the problems with those systems.

Secondly, if you go to the link they refer to as their source of information, it has been pulled.

Furthermore, that article by the Metro Water Services division of Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County, TN, has been a continuous embarrassment for city officials. The water professionals often site this article as an example how misinformation can promote businesses with dubious sales methods. I have seen this same article used in arguments against water softeners and, yet, have seen no others--from a qualified source--supporting that premise.

Soft water will...

increase the service life of your plumbing
increase the service life of your plumbing fixtures
increase the service life of your appliances
increase the service life of your water heater and dish washer
cut down your soap and detergent use
make your clothes softer and make them last longer
make your hair feel better (wife said I have to include that)

Try it, you'll like it :)
