What is wrong if you have 2 3way switches, I'll call them switch 1 and 2, and switch 2 only works when switch 1 is in the "on" position? I'm thinking that a 4way switch is needed???? NEVER MIND THAT ? I HAD THE COMMON WIRE WRONG! DUH

Yes, you correctly diagnosed your problem. It is a very common mistake. It usually occurs when people move wires by position on the switch (e.g., upper left to upper left) rather than paying attention to screw color (which is the correct algorithm to follow).
