I saw a table that had a very thick finish (about a half inch). In the finish was a piece of cloth or paper that seemed to float in the finish. It looke very good. How did they do this? I would like to try it on my kitchen table.

That type of finish is called decoupage. It is a two part solution that is mixed together and poured of the the table top. It is self leveling and is quite expensive to use. Before applying the finish, pictures etc. can be attached to the table top using craft spray. I don't know of any suppliers because I haven't used it for years. Check the internet and talk to someone at your local paint supply store (A real paint store, not a retail giant!!)
Good luck,

Just received a catalog that has the coating you spoke of. It's name given by this company is KraftKote. The company's phone number is 1-800-566-2548. The cost of one gallon is 47.99 plus shipping. I'm not listing the company's name because I try not to advocate one company over another!!
I hope this helps.
