How would you install a laundry chute going from the second floor to the basement without making it obvious that it's going through the first floor? I have a coat closet on the first floor that I "could" possibly use to hide the chute going from one floor to the next, but would that be a wise thing to do?

Extend the shoot through the floors and place a utility cabinet in the basement to catch the laundry. You can remove the top of cabinet and use fillers to expand your needs for height to conceal any space between cabinet and ceiling. A savvy kitchen designer should be able to pop up designs for baths, laundry, etc. where cabinetry is needed and accommodate your needs.

I've never seen a laundry chute that wasn't original to the house.
There may be more involved than just cutting a hole in the floor/ceiling. First you need to determine if there are any floor joists in the way, also plumbing an electrical. Hiding the chute should be the easy part.
