The plastic hose that connects the water softener to the holding tank keeps breaking near the point where it goes into the unit. And there is hardly any water in the holding tank. I have re-fitted it twice and it keeps breaking (not disconnecting). What could be causing this?

Is the fitting brass or plastic?

How old is the hose? Could be time to replace if it's brittle. Otherwise look for something causing tension where the fitting meets the hose. Maybe a slightly longer hose will alleviate. Possibly someone, or something causing the tank to shift and pulling on the hose.
