I have a large old double pane of glass in a picture window that is 4' x 5'. I will cut out the wood framing around it to remove as one piece. I can't dispose of something that big......Or actually I just wondered if the gargabe pickup will take it...hmmmm.... Anyway I figured I would have to cut it into smaller pieces and box it up before putting it in the trash. How could I cut it?

Since this isn't about cutting the glass into particular size or for reusing the glass you can go to a hardware store and buy a 3 dollar glass cutter and do well enough for disposal.Just score the glass with the cutter by laying it on a flat surface and pressing firmly but not too hard and pulling the cutter down in one smooth movement then tap to snap apart.Glass cutting takes practice and time to get the touch but since you're just tossing the glass if you mess up it doesn't matter.Of course be careful not to cut yourself when you snap it.Wear some protection like goggles etc.
Another possibility would be to call up a local glass shop and see if they'd want it or would dispose of it.I will tell you it's likely the garbage guys won't take it in one peice.
Do not pursure recycling.I've been told it's not the same type of glass as bottles.
Also you'll probably ruin the cutter so toss it when you're done.

First see if your garbage pick-up will take it in one piece. Since it is a double pane glass you will first have to seperate the panes by cutting through the sealant. This is a job in it's self and the glass will probably break at some point. Cutting glass takes some practice but it should be done using smaller pieces rather than a 4' X 5' sheet which could be dangerous.

get some masking tape , cover both sides of the glass completley ,put on some safety glasses and long sleeve shirt , take a hammer and hit it just hard enough to break it , put on some gloves and load it into a garbage can .
(the tape will keep the glass from flying )
I would do it with the window still in the frame ,
why take it out in one piece ?
