So the carpet in my dorm is this hideous mottled brown. I know it's like that to hide the dirt, but hiding the dirt means I'm never going to get off my computer to vacuum! And then when I want to lie on the floor, I get a nasty surprise of all the hair and grit that's building up down there. Also, it's very industrial, and not padded, and UNCOMFORTABLE! I want to buy some brightly colored carpet tiles for next year, to do the majority of the room. (Probably not under beds or dressers, that would be a waste of space, wouldn't it?)
Now I know all the carpet tile companies say you're supposed to have a smooth hard surface, but would it be doable at all to put them over the existing carpet? I know I wouldn't be able to use any adhesive, and the Flor ones are supposed to adhesive free. I would probably buy from Flor since they have the biggest color variety anyway. Would I have any problems putting carpet on top of carpet, just for the year?

Nope, pull the carpet out.

well, you see, I can't. It's a dorm room. I'm just looking for something temporarily to go on top of it, and thought that tiles would be more portable than a big rug, and also could work around cumbersome dorm furniture.

Vacuum and steam clean carpet. When dry, cover with area rug.
