There are plastics and o-rings that don't play well with WD40

Motors in devices like softener control valves are usually lubricated for life internally. If your motor is bound or seized then you need a new one.

If you are able to lubricate the motor on the softner or any motor for that matter WD-40 should not be used.
You need oil that is specifically labelled for use on electric motors.

Not sure of what brands are available to you but 3-in-1 for electric motors is available where I am.

justalurker is probably right though that if the motor sticks it should probably be replaced.

WD40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacing agent. While it does provide some lubrication initially, it is a poor choice for this because it evaportes quickly and then you're back where you started. For any application requiring lubrication over any period of time, there are better products available - just breaking something loose, WD40 is ok.
