Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - I have a snapper mower?

So I bought a snapper mower off of craigslist. Its a great little mower. It needed a battery, a tire and little TLC. The guy before me at some point had repainted it red. The problem is that I can't find the serial number or model number anywhere on this thing to get an idea of what year or anything. It has the gas tank in the back left corner and I think its a 30". It has a 8hp Briggs and stratton. It really needs a new blade belt. The old one is cracked and is missing a few chunks. I can tell its not going to last much longer. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Most of the older Snapper 30" riders used a Snapper Part Number 10749 (It's a 6 sided belt 68" long)

The model number of the engine should be stamped into the starter shroud, look at the code number the first two digits should be the year the engine was manufactured (i.e. 74=1974). If the engine is the original one then chances are the mower was manufactured around the same time, give or take. Click on the publications link at the above address and you can enter the info you do know and narrow down a possibility of your units model number.

The engine ID#s indicate that it is a 1981, and your description of the mower agrees. I think '81 is as close as you'll get with no frame/chassis numbers. Usually they're on a triangular shaped sticker on the frame near where the tube enters the rear frame under the seat.

I found that sticker, but it had paint and years of grime on it. Thanks for all of your help!

The engine in your picture looks like it may have been replaced. Originally I believe the engines on Snappers were painted white. That engine looks like a service replacement engine, I think your mower may be a few years older. As for parts most of the older models like this had few changes, try the Snapper site for a break down, or see if you can raise the numbers off the sticker you found on your unit.

I know my suggestion will be time consuming but without any numbers you don't have much choice. Go to this site and click on the "look up parts" link then click on Snapper from the drop down list and then the "product line" tab at the top of that page and then "rear engine riders" from that list. You will see several "series" units from which to choose and you can then look at each one and take notes for the parts you need and hopefully come up with the correct parts. http://www.jackssmallengines.net/partsf2.asp
