upper gears in my mercruiser alpha need to be replaced, local marine mechanic told me $800.00 to fix, did some research and the gear set are only $140.00 and also he said that i need special tools and shims to do the job right.
any truth to this?

Alpha gearing parts: $140.... Labor to install.....$660......... A working lower unit.... Priceless...

That's one of the biggest problems I've encountered with outdrives and outboards alike.... they require specialized tools/knowledge to do more than minor repairs on.

yes shims are needed as well as gauges to measure backlash
