Hi.
Im not sure what it is but Im trying to repair a large crack on the outside of the house where the newer part of the house meets up with the older part.
It appears to me they are both block. It has a coating over it like concrete I guess. Its not traditional stucco.
Im not sure what its called when you have a coating over block? Its not rough like stucco, mostly smooth with a few bumps.
The crack goes the entire length of the add on, top to bottom. The inspector said it was only cosmetic. Along one side of the crack it appears the "coating" is pulled away from the block cause it has a slight bubble look and when you knock on it, it sounds hollow.
I just want to know what to use to repair this. I have not started pulling anything apart yet. But it is holding up my painting of the house.

It may or may not be structural, but the block are cracked behind that, dollars to donuts. To repair it, you need to grind out the joint to a width that covers the spalls, then use a backer rod and good quality joint sealant to seal the joint. You will have to paint to it, not over it, so pick a joint sealant color that blends in. Follow the recommended installation for the joint sealant details closely.
