I have a Kenmore Elite (Heavy Duty, King Size Capacity, 3 Speed Motor with 6 Speed Combinations, Ultra Rinse System) Model # 11023032100.

Last night during the agitating/wash cycle (the agitator was working) there was a faint high pitch buzzing/whining sound. Once the rinse and spin cycle began, the noise became noticeably louder. I opened the lid, stopping the spin cycle, and closed it again. I realized that it was taking too long for the tub to get up to full speed speed. Once the tub was able to get up to speed, the noise stopped. Also, lately, some of our clothes haven't been getting spun enough and have been wetter than usual.

I did some research and took apart the washer, and realized that the coupler wasn't broken. I'm now at the point that I think it's the transmission. Does anyone have any experience with this? From what I've read, changing the transmission can be tricky. 1) Is it most likely the transmission, 2) Should I just have a professional do it?

Thanks!

Jeff

Even with all the water out of the basket, it is still slow?

It seemed to get up to speed (noise ceased) once all the water was out. I'm not sure if they are directly correlated, or not. I kept opening/closing the lid to hear the noise, finally I just left it down the final time to get all of the water out.

One thing, after pulling the motor off, a small finishing nail (1.5") fell onto the ground. Not sure if that would slow the spin or just stop it all together if it had been in the way.
