Hello,
I recently purchased an oak hardwood/veneer finished entertainment center. Easily chips.
Can water based Polycrylic be applied over the existing finish to prevent further chipping or would this be a major mistake?
Thanks
Jane

Jane,
Applying poly-acrylic over the existing finish is not a good idea. To have proper surface adhesion, the poly needs to be put on virgin wood and built up from there. The entertainment center is most likely to have a lacquer based or catalyzed finish (lacquer or varnish) and neither are a good base for the poly-acrylic.

If you just feel you have to do something about chips, stop by your local hardware supply store and pick up some of the felt coloring markers for touching up scratches and chips. Color the small areas with the marker and allow to dry for about an hour. Next, apply clear fingernail polish to the colored areas to lock in the color and protect the wood.
