Help!

Last night we noticed that our side-by-side was losing it's cool! It is self defrosting and we have no ice buildup, etc. We cleaned the coils this morning (the were pretty gross), but still do not have any indication that things are cooling down. The refrigerator is 5 years old. Could the compressor be bad already? Can anyone help? We really don't want to call a repairman...

How do you know it is self-defrosting? If it is stuck in defrost mode, maybe the thermostat has gone bad.

Have you fiddled with the thermostat? Perhaps some child in the house moved it without telling you? Can you hear the compressor running under any circumstance?

If you use the schematic on the back, you can hunt down what is turned on and from where. That should help narrow things down a bit.

Is there juice to the outlet? Light on and everything? Does it try to run? (Are you familiar with that certain sound compressors make? Are you privy to how to manually rotate a defrost timer knob, to take it out of defrost mode and put it in compressor/evaporator fan run mode? Are your door switches good? Some refrigerators will not let the evaporator fan work until the door switch engages. Does the evaporator motor fan work? (If you have a door button, open up the freezer door and push the button while you listen to the fan. Then feel for the wind. Sound alone is not enough without the wind in case the fanblade broke or is frozen shut.

(I enjoyed this as I had to put on my refrigerator thinking cap as I haven't got a refrigerator call in months. I used to get them, and dishwahser calls in droves. It goes that way.) Not counting, that is, the call about the racked Kelvinator me and the tenant are trying to rerack square again.)

what brand is it? Is the freezer ok, just not the fridge? There are coils usually inside the back panel or roof in the freezer. Are they frozen up? Can you hear the compressor kicking on, and its fan? The fan in the freezer?
And of course the door seals are all good?
