I have just heard that CD's DVD's will be replaced by flash drives
memory card
so what this means is the movie you rent will be on a flash drive likely or a memory card no more DVD's- similar to a digital camera

Not likely anytime soon. A read only chip big enough (4gb) to hold a full length DVD plus all the extras costs WAY more than a DVD can be pressed for (much less than $1 each). CD's are the same, still cheaper to press them.

I think a lot of time gets wasted on fixing
CD's & DVD's that get mishandled and such

"CD's DVD's soon obsolete?" Everything eventually becomes obsolete. I do not know how old you are, but most of the technology available when I was growing up has been obsolete for a very long time. "Soon" is the key word. There are probably technological advances on the horizon about which we know nothing at this time, but it is doubtful that CDs & DVDs will soon be obsolete.

You mean my 8 tracks aren't going to be back in style anytime soon???!! Sort of like the longevity of Zip drives. There was such as short span between floppy disks and CD's, that Zips didn't have a chance to catch on.

You mean my 8 tracks aren't going to be back in style anytime soon???!! whaddya mean "back in style"?. I'm still jammin' to mine. Have to do the pull it out and wind it up thing once in a while but they can;t be beat for when your too drunk to get up and change the tape. They just keep playing over and over and over and over and..........

as pendragon stated, cost is a huge factor in the change. ROM is way too expensive to be considered as a replacement any time soon.

Yes I agree perhaps I should of said replaced or additional
hardware eh?Just like the floppy I still use I have a very good computer
yet I got the floppy installed also.Perhaps the best way to state it is we'll have another option! sorry folks this sounds much better then saying CD's and DVD's will be obsolete...I'm sure they'll be around for a long long time
but no doubt folks will be buying there movies in a flash drive(thumb drive)
or memory type card reader

actually I can see a future where you supply the memory (thumb drive or sd card or whatever) and simply download from a "store".

Hey, they already do that online.

It is simply a matter of time for this type of transaction to become the norm since this actually cost the distributor even less.

I still believe the cd's and dvd's will stick around for a long time for programs and such where a back up is needed and it is also simpler to include one on the box you buy at the store.

I dont have the papers here anymore on it or about it.But yes it is going to be different . Its still CD and DVD but how they play. like it said dont buy a dvd player for a year or so. What is going on right now is a fight for how to play them. This is just like years back with the fight over how or what tape to use . You see that VHS tape won out. This is what we have now. Last months Consumer Reports had a full write up on this. ;)

Ed :You might be taling of the next generation optical media, which is Blu-Ray and HD-DVD right now.

If anything is to replace optical media, it would be network downloads.
