The render on an external wall of my cottage is letting rainwater in and mould is appearing on the inside. I have two quotes to re-render. One builder wants to add waterproofing to the wall; the other says it would be better not to as it would hold in water that is already in the wall. Which is the better option?
Thank you.

What type of render? Cementious or lime based?

The first builder, who wants to waterproof, aims to use a cement render but the second thought the original render had lime in it so he was going use same.

The second one is correct, provided the original is a lime based.
